Synaesthesia and autism
Julian Asher, Sally Wheelwright, Simon Baron-Cohen

While there have long been anecdotal reports of an increased incidence of synaesthesia amongst people with autism spectrum disorders, this question has never been rigourously investigated. The identification of a genetic region linked to autism in our pioneering genetic study as also linked to synaesthesia is the first piece of real evidence for a connection between the two. Drawing on our expertise on both conditions we are now investigating this potential connection and the accompanying implications for our understanding of both conditions.
