Personality characteristics and cognitive abilities in children with an autism spectrum diagnosis and their parents

We are currently looking for families to participate in a research project at the Autism Research Centre of the University of Cambridge and the Open University in Milton Keynes. The purpose of the research is to examine to what extent children with autism resemble their parents on a series of tasks. This study may give us important insights about which characteristics are shared between parents and children and which features are not.

To take part in this research, we are looking for families with at least 2 children where one or more has been formally diagnosed on the autism spectrum and is aged between 6 and 18 years old. The mother and father must not have a formal diagnosis of autism.

Parents will be asked to take part in an interview about their diagnosed child’s social and communication skills and the child will undergo a brief observational assessment. The study will also involve the completion of some questionnaires and cognitive tasks on a computer or on paper. In cases where parents have more than one child on the autism spectrum, then only one diagnosed child is tested. Depending on your family’s preference, the testing can either take place at home, or families can visit our testing rooms in Cambridge or Milton Keynes. We pay the travel expenses of your family and will in addition present you with a gift voucher of £25 as a thank you for taking part.

If you and your child are interested in participating, or would like further information, then please contact Edward Sucksmith directly on 01223 746030 or by email.
